Ivan Dias started his career in 1944, joining Delmege and Forsythe Company Ltd, serving there for seven years, which was followed by his next job at Heath & company, a tea trading firm.
Joined J.D. McLarens & Co. Ceylon Ltd in 1960 as a Junior Assistant and was appointed Director cum General Manager of McLarens Shipping Ltd in March 1976 followed by Directorial positions in McLarens Holiday Resorts (Pvt) Ltd, McLarens Travels Ltd, Modern Freight Ltd, GAC Shipping Limited and Interocean Services Ltd in the McLarens group. He is presently a Director of Zenith Marine Services Ltd and provides Consultancy services for Interocean Services Ltd.
He received an award from the Board of Directors of McLarens Shipping Group for demonstrating Loyalty and Commitment to the Group of Companies in 2008, received an award in recognition of 50 years of service to The McLarens Group in 2011. He also received an award from the Ceylon Association of Ships Agents in appreciation of his invaluable service and the contribution to the Ships’ Agency Industry, for 40 years and over in 2009.
Played for the Ceylonese Rugby and Football Club and won the Cup for several years during 1950 and 1960 in the Clifford Cup League as a Wing Three Quarter. He has played for Ceylon in the ‘All India Tournament’ in Calcutta and also for the Low Country Team for the Capper Cup against the Up-country Team in `1954, 1955 and 1959. He Coached the St. Benedict’s College Rugby Team and Played for the Old Josephian Sports Club in the Colombo Football League, as well as the Ceylon Football Association Cup. In 1958, he won the cup beating the Cargills Sports Club. He was also was selected to play for The National side of the Ceylon Football Association Team in 1959. Mr. Dias has also played for Sarasens Sports Club, Slave Island, in the P Saverimuttu Cup.
He has also taken part annually in the Mercantile Amateur Athletic Association Meets, excelling in his events. He has also played for the Mercantile Cricket Association Tournaments in the ‘A‘ Division and McLarens in the ‘B ‘ Division, whilst at Delmege and Heaths. Heaths won the Top Honour in The Colonel Griffith Challenge Cup due to his efforts in 1953. Played Hockey for Heath & Company in the Mercantile Hockey Association ‘A’ Division and were Champions, in 1957.
